Probably the most famous sewing machine every, the Singer 301 / 301A
(yes, sold many more than the ‘Featherweight’). Very solidly built! Way
‘stronger’ for heavier duty work than the smaller, Featherweight (that
is belt drive btw). Just a little bigger than a Feather Weight and
slightly more weight and is improved in a few areas. Features drop feed
control, more desk area than a featherweight and the mechanism is
completely gear driven so it runs very smooth and there are no belts to
glaze, break, stretch, SLIP (when doing heavier work like Denim or
Upholstery / vinyl / leather) or wear out. The motor is stronger making
it faster at the higher speeds and capable of heavier work I have owned
a few of both, and use this and another 301A
myself (just did some upholstery work on my boat vinyl and ‘Sunbrella’
canvas top and some leather and denim work).
ü We have gone through it, cleaning
inside and out, removing all the old, hardened lube of yester-year from
everywhere inside the machine, lubricating internal mechanism and
replacing any worn AC cords sections.
ü Drive clutch disassembled, solvent
cleaned and re-assembled.
ü Motor removed and disassembled.
Brushes cleaned and inspected. Commutator gaps cleaned. Commutator
plates cleaned and burnished. Bushings and axles cleaned and re-lubed
prior to reassembly. Worm gear scraped of old, hardened grease, solvent
cleaned and re-lubed. Internal motor feed wires inspected and are fine.
ü New bobbin tire installed (with a
‘spare’ included).
ü Original bobbin case,
Simanco #45750, with new release lever installed
(Just FYI: the ‘Chinese’ bobbin cases
have not worked in any of my Singer 301’s as their ‘leading edge’ is too
‘steep’ regardless of how they’re advertised).
ü Foot switch disassembled, cleaned and
inspected prior to re-assembly.
ü New
'Tall' rubber, bed cushions ordered and installed (sets the machine
slightly higher and grips a table / work surface better.
ü About 6 hours of service time.
Overall, it's had service just short of a ‘complete disassembly’.
ü Extensively tested after service (as
I’ve been using it and my other one interchangeably for tasks here
sewing multiple layers of vinyl, ‘Sunbrella canvas’ and denim. Works
great with heavier, UV rated outdoor upholstery threads as well.
ü Original gloss black finish with
delicate gold decal detailing
("Prisim" pattern) in good
shape with normal wear (spotching, worn spots etc).
The Slant Needle design allows a better view of your work and won't pop
any cross-threads (We read that the "Slant" needle was designed during
WWII to sew nylon parachutes). The “301” series can sew up to 1,600
stitches / min. It will go from ‘forward’ to ‘reverse’ stitching with
the flip of the control. You can do it as quickly as you want with no
issues (I do it all the time).

Runs and looks great.
I've sewn quite a lot on this machine following it's
service (I have another 301A and have decided I don't really need two.
I've used the Singer Feather Weights as well, but they just don't have
the 'horse power' that this does, and it's just easier to use this
larger machine).
Original black finish is in decent shape overall. Has some dull
‘splotches’ that wouldn’t easily clean off or polish out. Not sure what
they are or what they’re caused from. Features ‘Prism’ pattern, original
gold decaling. Also features recessed and bright work light built-in!
Comes with original tweed case in fair condition and variable speed
remote control footswitch
with a new wall plug and great condition wire.
READY TO GO!!!
There’s a lot of info on this machine on the web.
Cond. 8 (excluding case in condition rating)
