applications requiring high bidirectional transient and blocking voltage
capability and high thermal cycling performance” (subs with NTE5671)

I
sold A LOT of these as a dealer for MBT, when new in the '90's. We also
used them all over our shop lighting displays and on our rental / demo
rigs and for our 'Live Show' clinics. We simply used some good quality
'Zip Ties' and hung them directly from trussing / "T-Bar" lighting
stands for temporary shows and cables for permanent installs. With all
the one's I sold, I don't ever remember having one come back with a
problem. They're a pretty simple circuit inside, and the circuit boards
are constructed with 'real', 'full size' components (not SMD).
Bench disassembled here at our shop and fully tested (outputs, 'test'
buttons, 'Pre-Heat' etc. All output Edisons tight and chip / crack free.
All output Triacs originals (not replacements or substitutions installed
inside).
All 4 fuses correct value.
Cosmetically, it's got a few 'battle scars', but hey, it's a pre-owned,
stage lighting dimmer box. Still has top sticker that shows the DIN pin
In / Out diagram. Ground pin still intact on AC mains lead / cord.
Includes our 30 day limited warranty.

LED
lighting fixtures have MANY advantages over their 'incandescent / halogen'
counterparts. While they may SEEM expensive on the 'front end', it doesn't
take much 'math' to figure out they become way less expensive to own fairly
quickly. One great thing about LED fixtures, is that they use only a SMALL
FRACTION of electricity, compared with their 'incandescent' counterparts,
thus not only do they generate far less heat, but save considerably on your
electric bill. Another great advantage is that they have a 50,000-100,000 +
hour life span, so the days of replacing 'Halogen' / Sealed beam Par / stage
light bulbs at $25-$100 each, every 600-2000 hours are gone! Imagine the
savings in electricity & lamp replacement costs if you have lighting systems
consisting of 12-100 fixtures (don't forget the extra air conditioning costs
to offset each fixtures 90-1000 watts of heat). Yes, I know that LED fixtures do not have quite the candle power /
brightness of traditional stage light bulbs, and there may be situations
calling for longer 'throws' or simply the most candle power possible that
may mean LED fixtures (under $300) will not be the best choice. For those
situations you should probably stick with standard 'incandescent / sealed
beam' bulb technology. However, if you're like me and play smaller stages /
venues, or are a DJ with a dance floor smaller than 30' x 30', or a small
stage diner theater they will likely work well enough that their other
advantages will justify their slightly less candlepower. I have dealt with traditional stage light fixtures for years both as a
musician and as a system designer / installer and have been anticipating
this technology for a long time. I won't miss the heat from the lamps
outrunning the venue's air conditioner, or the electric meter in my personal
'garage band' space spinning at light speed, or spending $50 every time one
of my fixtures get's 'bumped' during set up / tear down and takes out a bulb
filament.

For assistance in choosing the
correct fixture, review the following. PAR 64 - These are the largest of the common 'Par' cans found in stage
lighting. Generally best for the largest of stages where there is trussing
or a lighting grid that is 8-20' above the talent / subject. These cans are
large, so if you have a typical 'bar' stage or small 300 seat or smaller
venue, they will likely be 'overkill' both in lumens and
in physical size.
You simply need a LARGE space for them to be justified for most
applications. In 20 years, I would have to think hard the last time I sold
any Par 64 fixtures to your typical 'weekend warrior' or semi-pro / bar
band.
PAR 56 - Slightly smaller than the Par 64 and more common in the medium to
medium-large stage's. Bridges the gap for medium to large bands / acts
between Par 38 and Par 64. Still, probably overkill for most medium size
stages or venues under 250 capacity.
PAR 38 - Great for shorter throws of 3-12 feet away from the 'talent',
typical 'bar' stages / venues of less than 200 capacity and for smaller
group settings. Certainly most small bar / venue / coffee shop / restaurant
gigs are going to be best served with Par 38 fixtures. This is my personal
favorite size for most of the gigs I have played, especially when mixed with
some Par 36 'Pin Spots' for 'back lighting'. You can pack more of them in
smaller spaces both at the gig and loaded on the truck. It's also easier to
lift a 'rack' of them as they weigh less.

At this point we do not have
any quality light stands currently available to us. For smaller groups / DJ's, my personal favorite was always 'Ultimate' brand
stands and fittings. There were other brands that had 'cool' looking,
pre-assembled trusses, but their fittings were not quality and either would not
'hold' position and or would often break. I built many systems using Ultimate's
TS-33 stands, with extensions and their 'bulk / heavy wall' tubing as trussing.
Their 'heavy wall' tubing can be drilled, and outfitted with pre-assembled bolts
from the hardware store. Eye bolts in the ends are handy for hanging them for
storage with carabineers in a garage or camper shell or box truck. I used 5/16'
'all thread' thru the aluminum tubing with lock washers / nuts on each side of
the tubing. Leaving about 1" of 'all thread' exposed on each side allows
fixtures to be mounted on the top and bottom of the tubing. Above all, no matter how you mount your lighting fixtures, remember you are
responsible for the safety of any one who might be endangered by the equipment
hanging over their heads. Never 'overload' your system design limits in weight
or AC current / heat output. Always 'over engineer' every aspect / part of the
structure components. Use safety cables / mechanisms appropriately and
liberally. Verify the integrity of mounting / anchor points. Verify and
understand the current limits of your AC system (again with LED fixtures,
this becomes much less of an issue).
