As we've had a number of these, we knew that it was likely the "Balance" control potentiometer. It was the issue, so the pot was 'jumpered'. Fairly 'excusable' work around as most folks are typically leaving their 'balance' control turned to the center 100% of the time anyway. While this is a fairly versatile pre-amp, that we 'still like', it does have a few 'difficult to service' issues and a couple of 'semi-permanent' defects. Firstly there's a fairly common issue with the 'balance' control pot. It's anemic / fragile in the first place, which makes it prone to 'breaking' in such a way that it will drop channels. We have not found a replacement. There are a couple of websites that have photo essays on doing 'micro-surgery' on them, but it's very difficult, time consuming with sketchy results. Probably the most practical way to address the issue with the balance pot is to 'jumper' across it. It can either be left in place or removed once jumpered. The same 'fix' can be utilized on the 'Headphone' level pot, then simply use the main volume of the pre-amp to control the headphone level (like EVERY other unit does). "Hi-Filter" is also a fairly 'fringe' feature and seldom used by most folks, so we decided it was 'excusable') ü Unit also has the issue, common with the "Balance" control potentiometer affecting the headphone amplifier, with additional issue with the 'headphone' section, thus we have bypassed the entire headphone functions on this one. ü All inputs tested and both side produces clean and even sine waves! While this amp was originally rated at 50 WPC, on our test bench the internal amplifiers of this particular unit, #...1974, produced 24 Volts per channel at 8 Ohms for 72 Watts per channel and 20 Volts at 4 Ohms for 100 Watts per channel via discrete, TO-3, metal cased outputs (2x Sanken 2SA980 & 2x 2SC2260) Idle current draw 0.6A.
